Do you manage data, or does data manage you?
Data have a finite lifespan, with good reason. Data should not be kept forever, as old, obsolete data are still discoverable and can potentially harm you. PII, PCI, HIPAA, and financial data should be purged regularly, especially when regulatory requirements have been met.
There is a cautionary tale about a company that framed its first publicly issued stock certificate, and hung it up on a wall at headquarters. A lawsuit arose, in which the company and shareholders disputed key terms and conditions in the company’s filings. The company’s attorney insisted that a certain term had never been associated with the issuance of stock. However, during discovery, the shareholders’ attorney saw the original certificate and subpoenaed it for trial. That 150-year old stock certificate proved the shareholders’ case!
