Surviving a disaster

Disasters are a fact of life. Storms, attacks, electrical failures, mass transit stoppages, and all kinds of accidents can disrupt your normal business operations. In the global cybereconomy, disruptions like these can have a devastating impact that resonates throughout a corporation. We all know about extraordinarily disruptive events such as:

• 9/11 • Hurricane Sandy • Hurricane Irene

These widespread incidents created huge ripple effects throughout cyberspace. But there are other, less obvious disasters that can have the same damaging results, such as:

  • The first World Trade Center attack (1993)
  • Oklahoma City Bombing
  • The One New York Plaza fire of 1988
  • The Seaport Fire of 1990
  • The Nor’easter of 2002
  • The Nor’easter of 1996
  • The Northridge Quake of 1994
  • The WannaCry/WannaCrypt Ransonware attack of 2017

Even if you haven’t heard of all of these, each one devastated the operations of one or many more companies. For example, the Nor’easter of 2002 brought down hundreds of companies already in contingency mode after 9/11 – they fell suddenly offline as the DR site in New Jersey collapsed. The One New York Plaza fire of 1988 almost brought down part of the global financial liquidity system. The Seaport Fire of 1990 almost drove a Latin American country into bankruptcy. The WannaCry/WannaCrypt Ransomware attack hit 100 of the Fortune 1000 firms, with losses as high as 1/3 of Billion Dollars. The worst one, 9/11, caused the entire U.S. bond market to shut down for a whole week – all due to the collapse of the Twin Towers and the damage they caused to lower Manhattan.
